Salvatore Farragamo Celebrates 35 Years of Vara

In 1978, Salvatore Farragamo created an iconic shoe design called the Vara. The design is sleek and elegant, featuring a mid-sized heel, a prominent bow, and a golden buckle. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Vara, a classic design that is still in high demand today.

For the anniversary event, photographer Claiborne Swanson Frank gathered 21 of New York’s most prominent fashion “it-girls” to put together Vara-themed photo gallery, L’Icona. The 21 women selected included faces like Olivia Palermo and Lauren Santo Domingo.

Olivia Palermo is an American socialite, model and actress best known for her role in reality TV show The City. She has graced the cover of magazines such as Elle and Marie Claire. Lauren Santo Domingo is a contributing editor to Vogue and co-founder of the elite online fashion boutique, Moda Operandi. She is married to Colombian billionaire-heir Andres Santo Domingo and is frequently involved in high-profile New York events.
Salvatore Ferragamo is one of the world’s top luxury brands, and all twenty-one women photographed were hand-selected by Ferragamo’s creative director, Massimiliano Giornetti. Each woman was photographed in her customized Vara shoes in various locations around the world. Palermo’s are navy with turquoise accents on the bow and heel and Santo Domingo’s are a classic black design. Both women’s photos were taken in Paris, France.
