Oscar award winning writer and director Sofia Coppola’s newest film, The Bling Ring, is anticipated to entertain audiences this summer with its raw and scandalous content. The movie, starring a glamorous but delusional Emma Watson alongside a cast of newer talent, tells the story of L.A. teenagers fixated on fashion and celebrity lifestyles, an obsession that spins dangerously out of control when they start robbing celebrity homes, taking millions in clothing, shoes, and jewelry. Their escapades eventually catch up with the group of teens, coined the “Bling Ring” by the press during the very publicized court hearings that followed their arrests.
What’s the most shocking part of Coppola’s film? The fact that it’s based on actual events that took place in Los Angeles only a few years ago. “The Suspects Wore Louboutins,” an article published in Vanity Fair Magazine by Nancy Jo Sales during the trials, inspired The Bling Ring’s script. While the article reports on testimony from the teens, the film tells the story preceding the arrests, illustrating the devastating power that our culture’s obsession with luxury clothing labels, celebrity lifestyles, and wealth has over its youth.

The plot is as scandalous as it is sad; Coppola’s portrayal of emotionally delusional, superficial, and fame-hungry teens seems almost unbelievable, until you remember the fact that these characters were formed out of real-life youth. What’s less depressing is the incredible clothing and accessories the cast wears (and steals) throughout the film, which is visually fantastic. The Bling Ring brims with extravagance and high fashion, so you can expect to see labels like Gucci, Prada, Chanel, Burberry, Marc Jacobs, and Yves Saint Laurent, among others in the movie.
