In the wacky world of celebrity baby-naming, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s daughter, named North, actually got pretty lucky (they could have named her something like “Diva Muffin Zappa,” after all). Still, many people are criticizing the pair for their choice of giving their newborn the name “North West,” although surprisingly, Vogue Magazine seems to approve.
An article for The Huffington Post says, “The thought of Anna Wintour getting chummy with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West over lunch [recently] was strange enough. The rumor that the Vogue editor-in-chief personally approved of Kim and Kanye’s baby name, North West, inspired even more skepticism.” Despite being an unlikely enthusiast for the unusual name, the magazine’s website posted an essay titled, “A Girl Named North? Why Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s Baby Name Isn’t That Unusual,” which seems to suggest that the popular publication is giving the couple its seal of approval. Dalton Conley, a New York University professor and author of a book about naming children wrote the essay for Vogue.
In the essay, Conley almost conversationally explains, “one could say it was almost overdetermined that they would chose a unique name for their child. On the one hand, there’s a long tradition of celebrities marking their status by giving atypical names to their children,” discussing how “North” is actually pretty tame as far as celebrity baby names are concerned. The Huffington Post is still baffled about how an essay like Conley’s ended up on one of the most influential fashion magazine’s website. Is Vogue suggesting that Kim and Kanye are actually on the cutting edge of baby naming?
How do you weigh in on the high-profile couple’s choice of baby name?
