When New York Fashion Week takes the city by storm each year, everyone seems to have their own way of commemorating the occasion. Designers and their entourages celebrate at glamorous after-parties, New York’s elite flock to their coveted front row seats, fashion bloggers scope out and gush about the who-what-where, and publications fill their pages with enough “best-dressed” lists to last until next September. How did Swagger New York kick off this year’s New York Fall Fashion Week? The website, known for its reporting of awesome global street style and all things current and cultural, dressed its favorite 90’s cartoon characters for Fashion Week, and sent them to the shows!
In Exclusive: Lisa Simpson, Daria, and Other 90s Cartoon Characters Take on New York Fashion Week, Swagger New York created a series of illustrations that depict iconic 90’s cartoons navigating New York Fashion Week while looking incredibly chic. The site explains that when Fashion Week kicked off,
“We’re excited to see new looks from the new season, [but] we are not excited to weave through the hordes of bloggers standing around Milk waiting for a street style snap. So, naturally, we’ve created a fantasy Fashion Week world, inhabited solely by our fave 90s cartoon characters like Daria, Captain Planet, Lisa Simpson, and more.
Over a couple weeks, we collaborated with mega-Italian designer Michele Moricci to come up with the six characters we love, and the shows that they’d attend in that specific designer’s A/W 2013 threads.”
The collection of cartoons is illustrated wonderfully; each character is dressed impeccably in styles that reflect their personalities and would-be relationships with the designers. Lisa Simpson looks bold and confident dressed in head to toe Marc Jacobs, while Sailor Moon is drawn with coffee cup in hand outside of the Rodarte show, looking strong, but feminine. Captain Planet is wearing Hood by Air, and Angelica Pickles looks effortlessly chic in Diane Von Furstenberg. Beavis and Butthead, classic 90’s troublemakers, are channeling a rock and roll vibe in Jeremy Scott, and Daria looks so cool and fashion-forward in Prabal Gurung.
Daria’s illustration also comes with the most amusing caption of the bunch: “Daria is only here to fulfill her duty as Sick Sad World‘s editor. Like Anna Wintour, she’s not interested in stopping for street style photographers. “Kill me now. #NYFW”, Daria tweets.”
Swagger New York proves that sometimes, Fashion Week is made even more enjoyable with a sense of humor.
