The Most Popular Halloween Costumes of 2013

“In the real world, Halloween is when kids dress up in costumes and beg for candy. In Girl World, Halloween is the one day a year when a girl can dress up like a total slut and no other girls can say anything else about it.” –Cady from the film “Mean Girls”

Remember when we were little kids and dressing up for Halloween was the most exciting part of October (second only to procuring massive amounts of candy whilst Trick-or-Treating of course)? Back then I remember dressing in scary witch or monster costumes to go out with my equally decked-out friends, always handmade of course.

These days, the spookiest holiday of the year is still celebrated with costumes and themed parties, but the trends in Halloween clothing are less frightening and more referential to pop culture than macabre icons. Just take it from Google, which has compiled a list of the biggest trends in Halloween costumes for 2013. According to Google Shopping search results, these are the costumes that have received the most searches so far this year:

  1. The Minions from “Despicable Me”
  2. Characters like Walt and Jesse from “Breaking Bad”
  3. Foxes (presumably inspired by the “What Does the Fox Say” viral video)
  4. The Cast of “Duck Dynasty”
  5. Miley Cyrus
  6. Characters from “Minecraft”
  7. Daenerys Targaryen from HBO’s “Game of Thrones”
  8. Batman
  9. Dresses inspired by “The Great Gatsby”
  10. Daft Punk Helmets

Okay, so other than Batman, which some might argue is a classic Halloween costume, none of these characters have anything to do with the creepy, ghoulish costumes of Halloweens past. It’s interesting to see how popular trends unfold. Did you predict that any of these costumes would be the most popular for 2013? What are you dressing up as for Halloween?
